Vientiane, Lao PDR, 25 August 2026 – Nam Theun 2 Power Company Limited (NTPC) announces that it is preparing to conduct a controlled release of water through the Nakai Dam spillway gates as part of its standard reservoir management, dam safety, and flood management procedures.
Recent weather forecasts indicate that substantial rainfall is expected across the Nam Theun basin in the coming days. As reservoir inflows continue to increase, NTPC has been closely monitoring hydrological conditions, reservoir levels, weather forecasts, and downstream river conditions.
Based on current assessments, a controlled spillway release may commence from 26 August 2026, with release rates gradually increasing in stages. The exact timing and release volumes will depend on actual inflow conditions and weather developments.
This operation is a planned and precautionary safety measure designed to maintain adequate reservoir storage capacity during the wet season and ensure the continued safe operation of the Nam Theun 2 hydropower facilities. The release follows established operating procedures and does not indicate any structural issue with the dam or associated infrastructure.
NTPC has informed relevant government authorities and is coordinating closely with provincial, district, and local stakeholders. Community warning systems and communication channels are being activated to ensure timely dissemination of information to potentially affected areas.
