Bangkok, Thailand | 13–14 August 2026
Nam Theun 2 Power Company (NTPC) actively participated in the Mekong Hydropower Forum 2026 and the associated Technical Working Session, held on 13–14 August 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, following an invitation from the Department of Energy, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Lao PDR.
The event brought together representatives from government agencies, the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS), hydropower operators, power utilities, development partners, financial institutions, and international experts. The forum provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange experiences and strengthen regional cooperation on sustainable hydropower development, water resources management, flood resilience, dam safety, and climate adaptation.
Sharing Nam Theun 2’s Experience
Representing NTPC, the Hydro Safety Manager served as a technical presenter and panelist, sharing Nam Theun 2’s experience in Hydro Safety Management, Water and Flood Management, Wet Season Preparedness, and cooperation along the Nam Theun–Nam Kading River Basin.
NTPC’s participation provided an opportunity to share practical experience while learning from hydropower operators, government agencies, and regional partners from Lao PDR, Thailand, Cambodia, Viet Nam, and other parts of the Mekong region.
The discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation in operational data sharing, coordinated reservoir operations, flood forecasting, early warning systems, dam safety management, and communication protocols. These areas are increasingly important for improving regional preparedness and resilience, particularly during extreme hydrological events.
Technical Working Session | 13 August 2026
During the Technical Working Session on “Advancing Water and Energy Cooperation in the Mekong,” NTPC contributed to discussions on coordinated reservoir operations, flood forecasting, notification procedures, data sharing, communication mechanisms, and emergency preparedness among hydropower operators and water management agencies.
As part of Session 1: Advancing Coordinated Reservoir Operations and Water Management, NTPC delivered a technical presentation entitled “Hydro Safety and Water Management.”
The presentation highlighted the integrated approach adopted at Nam Theun 2 to support safe and reliable dam operations. Key areas included reservoir management, hydrological monitoring, risk assessment, dam safety governance, and coordination with relevant stakeholders.
NTPC also played a facilitation role in the dedicated working group on Flood Management and Energy Security. The discussion focused on how hydropower operators can balance flood mitigation requirements, public safety responsibilities, and electricity generation objectives during extreme hydrological events.
Mekong Hydropower Forum | 14 August 2026
On the second day, NTPC continued its active engagement during the Mekong Hydropower Forum, which focused on strengthening cooperation between hydropower operators and regional water management institutions.
The forum emphasized practical cooperation in areas including operational data sharing, reservoir coordination, flood preparedness and forecasting, dam safety, sustainability, and climate resilience.
During the session “Strengthening Cooperation between Hydropower Operators and Regional Water Management Institutions,” NTPC shared its experience in two key areas:
NT2 Wet Season Management and Preparedness Program
The program supports NT2’s preparedness for the wet season through systematic planning, monitoring, coordination, and operational measures designed to manage changing hydrological conditions and maintain safe dam operations.
Peer-to-Peer Initiative
NTPC also presented the Peer-to-Peer Initiative with Theun-Hinboun Power Company (THPC) and Nam Theun 1 Power Company (NT1PC).
The initiative promotes knowledge sharing, benchmarking, and continuous improvement among hydropower operators in the Nam Theun River Basin. Areas of cooperation include water management, flood management, dam safety, and operational excellence.
Strengthening Cooperation for a Resilient Mekong
NTPC’s participation in the Mekong Hydropower Forum 2026 reflects the Company’s commitment to operational excellence, dam safety, responsible water management, and sustainable hydropower development.
The forum reaffirmed that stronger regional cooperation, timely information sharing, coordinated planning, and practical collaboration among hydropower operators and water management institutions are essential to improving water and energy security and strengthening resilience across the Mekong Basin.
Through continued knowledge sharing and regional partnerships, NTPC remains committed to contributing to safer, more sustainable, and more resilient water and energy management for the benefit of both upstream and downstream communities.
