In a society where corruption remains a challenge, integrity and transparency must go beyond aspirational words and be translated into concrete action. Nam Theun 2 Power Company Limited (NTPC) has demonstrated this commitment through measurable and effective practices that strengthen trust and credibility.

In 2024, the Lao PDR ranked 114th out of 180 countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index, highlighting the continued need to enhance governance systems and elevate ethical standards across all sectors.

In response, NTPC has taken a clear and proactive step by allowing an independent external organization to audit its Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS), ensuring that all business activities are conducted lawfully, ethically, and transparently.

Nam Theun 2 Power Company Limited is the first and only company in the Lao PDR to receive ISO 37001:2016 Anti-Bribery Management System certification from the British Standards Institution (Thailand). This certification is not merely a formal endorsement, but a testament to the company’s robust, credible, and well-structured governance framework, which can serve as a benchmark for other organizations in the country’s hydropower sector.

This achievement is part of NTPC’s five-year Ethics and Compliance Development Plan, which aims to modernize internal management systems, align operations with shareholder policies and international standards, and embed a strong culture of ethics among all employees.

Prior to certification, the company conducted a comprehensive internal assessment to identify gaps and areas for improvement in policies, procedures, and governance mechanisms. With full support from senior management, NTPC adopted ISO 37001—an internationally recognized and effective standard for preventing bribery—as its core operational framework.

During the preparation phase, NTPC established a cross-functional ethics and compliance working group comprising representatives from multiple departments. This team collaborated to enhance policies, procedures, and operational practices across all company activities in line with Lao PDR laws and ISO 37001 requirements. Extensive training programs were also delivered to ensure employees could effectively apply the system in their daily work.

The ISO 37001 certification confirms that NTPC’s anti-bribery system is appropriately designed for its business operations, effectively implemented, and consistently maintained.

Looking ahead, Nam Theun 2 will continue to regularly review and strengthen its systems, foster a culture of integrity, and extend anti-bribery principles to development partners, external stakeholders, contractors, suppliers, and surrounding communities.

This achievement underscores that Nam Theun 2 does not merely speak about integrity—it puts it into practice. By operating responsibly, transparently, and sustainably, the company contributes to the development of the Lao PDR and sets a strong example for the hydropower industry both nationally and regionally.
