Nam Theun 2 actively participated in the 28th Congress of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) on 16-23 May 2025, held in Chengdu, China. This prestigious event brought together over 1,300 dam and hydropower professionals from more than 70 countries to discuss innovations in dam safety, climate resilience, and sustainable infrastructure.
Representing Nam Theun 2, the Plant Director Dr Dousith Phommachanh and Hydrometeo Team Leader Khoutthaphone Vanhnavong, co-presented a technical report on the DSC tunnel remedial work, in collaboration with EDF-CIH and Freyssinet. The congress also featured a presentation on Nam Theun 2’s structural protection against an exceptional concrete dissolution phenomenon, highlighting the project’s commitment to safety and innovation.
Key highlights of the congress included four major discussion themes: climate adaptation, dam safety, seismic resilience, and future-ready infrastructure. The Asia-Pacific Group Workshop showcased regional case studies on dam upgrading for climate resilience, while the General Assembly addressed technical bulletins and leadership elections.
Nam Theun 2’s involvement extended through its role as Vice President of the Lao Association on Dams (LAD), alongside representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Mines, EDL-Gen, and HEVETAS. The LAD also presented a national report on dam safety activities in Laos.

The event underscored the importance of international collaboration and technical advancement in addressing the evolving challenges of dam engineering and water resource management.
