{"id":9280,"date":"2025-09-16T09:31:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T02:31:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.namtheun2.com\/?p=9280"},"modified":"2025-09-17T08:28:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T01:28:10","slug":"electricite-du-laos-and-nam-theun-2-sign-landmark-memorandum-of-understanding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.namtheun2.com\/lao\/electricite-du-laos-and-nam-theun-2-sign-landmark-memorandum-of-understanding\/","title":{"rendered":"Electricit\u00e9 du Laos and Nam Theun 2 Sign Landmark Memorandum of Understanding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Vientiane &#8211; Lao PDR, 12 September 2025<\/em> &#8211; Electricit\u00e9 du Laos (EDL) represented by Mr. Souliya Manivong, Deputy Managing Director and Nam Theun 2 Power Company Limited (NTPC), represented by Mr. Marc-Antoine Rupp, Chief Executive Officer, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 12 September 2025, marking a significant milestone in their partnership and reaffirming their shared commitment to the growth and sustainability of Laos\u2019 energy sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attending the signing ceremony were H.E Mr. Chanthaboun Soukaloun, Laos\u2019 Vice-Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mr. Akhomdeth Vongsay, PhD,. Managing Director of EDL and senior management from NTPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This MoU represents the first key step towards amending the existing Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) between EDL and NTPC. Under the proposed amendment, electricity production from Nam Theun 2 will be increased from 300 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to 500 GWh per year<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Responding to Growing Domestic Demand<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision to increase energy production comes in response to the rising need for energy for households and businesses in Laos. Indeed, EDL and NTPC have been working closely since 2024 to increase the energy dispatch to the domestic grid, as the country continues its trajectory of economic growth and modernization. This enhanced output from Nam Theun 2 will play a vital role in catering to the nation\u2019s energy demands, especially in central Khammouane province, where the hydropower project is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Promoting Renewable, Affordable, and Reliable Energy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nam Theun 2, one of Laos\u2019 flagship sources of renewable energy, is renowned for its commitment to environmental stewardship and community development. The increased capacity will allow EDL to provide clean electricity, reduce reliance on imported energy, and help maintain stable and competitive energy prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Strengthening Collaboration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The signing of the MoU underscores the strong partnership between EDL and NTPC and their shared vision for a sustainable energy future. Both parties are confident that by amending the PPA, which is expected to be completed within 2025, they can enhance operational efficiency and continue to deliver exceptional value to the people of Laos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the MoU, EDL and NTPC will work closely to finalize the amendment to the Power Purchase Agreement.
