 Nam Theun River’s hydropower potential identified by Mekong Secretariat.
1989/91
World Bank feasibility study undertaken by Snowy Mountains Engineering Corp.
1993
 Agreement to develop the. Project in accordance with World Bank guidelines signed between Government of Laos (GOL) and Private Sponsors (NTEC)
1997
First series of environmental and social Safeguards documents produced.
1997/98
Asian Crisis: Governments of Laos and Thailand agree to delay development of the Project.
2000
EGAT and NTEC agree on a proposed electricity tariff in May
2001
Shareholders Agreement signed in September
2002
NTEC and GOL create NTPC as a Lao company in September
2002/03
Concession Agreement signed in October
2003
Power Purchase Agreements signed with both EGAT and EDL in November
2004
Completion of safeguard documents and Project financing activities.
2005
Financial Closed (FC) and beginning of full construction activities in May
2005 Nam Theun 2 Cornerstone Ceremony in November

Construction activities and implementation of safeguards.
2006 Nam Theun 2 River Diversion Ceremony in March
