Nam Theun 2 is a 1,070 MW trans-basin hydropower scheme capable of producing, situated in Khammouane province in the Lao PDR. Click here for Project map The Project commenced construction in June 2005 and is due to begin delivering power to the Lao grid and for export to Thailand in December 2009. It is being implemented by NTPC through a Concession Agreement with the Lao Government, with the contractual involvement of various international financial institutions and commercial lenders via a series of financing agreements. Click here for Project financing schematic NT2 is the largest foreign investment to date in the hydropower sector in the Lao PDR. It is a Build-Operate-Transfer project, under which NTPC will operate the facility for 25 years, and then transfer it to the Lao Government. The project consists of 21 construction sites, covering three different provinces: Bolikhamxay (main dam), Khammouane (power station) and Savannakhet (transmission line). The construction phase is due to end when power generation begins in December 2009 but environmental and social programmes will continue from 2010-2015. NT2 will sell a substantial part of its electricity (995MW) to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) on the basis of a long-term Power Purchase Agreement signed in 2003. It will supply 75 MW of generating capacity and electrical energy to Electricité du Laos (EDL).
